The ZVES is a part of the Cleft Lip and Palate Center.
Pre- and postoperative profiles of (pre)speech- and language development are produced for young patients at the Center. These developmental profiles are based on the latest findings from basic research.
Recently, the scope has been extended to newborns and young infants with sensorineural hearing loss.

The exploration of the earliest steps toward language in infants and children under different circumstances – e.g. surrounding language(s), gestational age, twins – constitutes an important field of research. Kathleen Wermke’s team has over 30 years of experience in this field. Together with the amount of reference data gathered throughout these years of research, and combined with the use of special analytical tools, this expertise opens new possibilities for the identification of early risk markers, as well as for the development of early intervention programs.
